Freshman gymnast honored
Yoshi Mori of Illinois was selected Big Ten Freshman of the Week in men’s gymnastics, the conference announced Monday. It is the second such award of his career.
Mori won three event titles Saturday to lead the top-ranked Illini to a 349.700-341.350 victory against No. 5 Ohio State at Columbus, Ohio. The Anaheim, Calif., native finished first in the all-around, parallel bars and high bar. He also placed third in still rings and pommel horse.
In wrestling:
Poeta advances. Illini wrestling assistant coach Mike Poeta moved a step closer to a roster spot on the U.S. World Cup team by winning a wrestle-offs match last month at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Poeta, a former three-time Illini All-American, defeated 2009 World Team member Trent Paulsen 3-0, 5-2 in a 163-pound freestyle match Jan. 22 at the U.S. World Cup Wrestle-Offs. Poeta likely will face Paulsen’s brother, Travis, on Feb. 17, with the winner advancing to the March 6-7 World Cup in Russia.
Poeta also is scheduled to compete in the Cerro Pelado Granma international freestyle tournament Feb. 19 in Havana, Cuba.
