The first-year head coach of the Illini wrestling team might not want to view this clip - no doubt, it's a painful memory - but UI fans and Heffernan's current and former Illini wrestlers should find it of interest. One year after winning the 150-pound NCAA title, the then-Iowa senior made it to the national title round again in 1987. Heffernan and Iowa State rival Tim Krieger battled through regulation and overtime (shown in this video) with neither ending up with an edge on the scoreboard. Instead it required going deep, and then deeper, and then deeper still into the rulebook to decide this match. Finally, tournament officials found a tiebreaker that applied at criteria No. 5.  Krieger was declared the winner on greater number of escapes. It must have been a crushing way to lose a match that was decided not on the meet, but by the rulebook.
