UI wrestling recruit in spotlight
|
Mahomet-Seymour wrestler Ryan Berger was ranked third nationally among seniors at 135 pounds in the third annual InterMat National Top 12 High School Wrestlers listing.
The Illinois recruit and a two-time state champion was also rated third among all seniors in Illinois. Ironically, one of the Illinois preps placed ahead of him was also at 135, Mount Zion's Brad Owens. Owens was rated second.
At 152, the nation's top-ranked performer was Moline's Matt Lackey, also an Illinois signee.
The compilation, released Monday, has separate categories for the top juniors and sophomores, and is considered one of the nation's most comprehensive and prestigious rankings for preps.
Berger was the only area athlete to receive recognition.
