Penn named Co-Freshman of Week
CHAMPAIGN -- Illinois forward Karisma Penn was named the Big Ten's Co-Freshman of the Week today after a stellar performance against Northwestern on Sunday.
Penn shared the honor with Michigan's Dayeesha Hollins after collecting 10 points, six rebounds, a career-high six assists, four blocks and three steals. The four blocks helped her break the school's freshman record for blocks. The weekly honor was her fourth of the season.
Penn is a strong contender to be named to the league's all-freshman team later today.
Sorry IlliniWBB fan, but one does not get three steals without hussle. One does no set the freshman blocks record without hussle. (That record would have been set by people called Lacey and Jenna, remember them?) Let us recall that Brianna got hurt, and KP has played A LOT of minutes in a long season.
Now, one could argue that she needs to become better with the passing, and the free-throw shooting. However, she is doing quite well for Illinois this year. This is also a team sport; it does no good to put all expectations on Demetri McCamey or KP.
