Iowa 77, UI women 67

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Trailing by 30 points early in the second half, things looked bleak for Jolette Law's Illinois women's basketball team.

But the Illini never quit and went on a 34-8 run to cut the deficit to four with 3:30 remaining before eventually falling 77-67 at Iowa on Sunday.

"They hit a bunch of threes and that combined with our turnovers put us in a big hole," Law said. "But my team didn't quit and that's what we can take from this game. We could have dropped our heads when we got down, but we showed who we are in the second half and that's something we can build on."

Iowa went 9 for 10 from the free throw line down the stretch to close out the Illini (13-12, 5-10 Big Ten), who were led by Kersten Magrum's 14 points.

Jenna Smith had 13 points to go over the 2,000 mark for her career. Smith, who now has 2,001 points, also had seven rebounds.

Lydia McCully scored all 11 of her points in the second half, and Karisma Penn chipped in 10 points.

Things will continue to look bleak with Jolette as coach.
