Volleyball commit hurts elbow

SINGAPORE – Illinois volleyball commitment Liz McMahon suffered an elbow injury of undetermined severity Tuesday after helping the U.S. Girls' Youth Olympic Team advance to the finals of the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

The 6-foot-6 right-side hitter stumbled and fell on her right elbow while walking outdoors.

"Elizabeth was simply walking up to the Village to get something to eat and tripped over a little chain that was across the road," Rod Wilde, the head coach of the U.S. team, said in report appearing on USA Volleyball's website.

The right-handed McMahon, a high school senior from Liberty Township, Ohio, had the arm in a sling as she watched Thursday's gold-medal match. The Americans, who beat Belgium in pool play, lost to the Belgians 17-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-12 in the final.

Through the semifinals, McMahon was averaging a team-best 3.45 points per set.

"You take your top scorer from your team and obviously that's a big part of your offense and transition," Wilde said. "She was our top scorer, so obviously that impacts how well we can play. It didn't have an effect on our passing, but maybe we could have scored out of some of those situations where we didn't have good passes."

McMahon is scheduled to have the elbow, which has experienced fluid buildup, re-examined when she returns home.
