CHAMPAIGN – Illinois celebrated Senior Night on Saturday, but the Illini hope to play again this season at Huff Hall.
Continuing to build their NCAA tournament resume, the fifth-ranked Illini beat Wisconsin 25-23, 25-11, 25-21 in front of nearly 1,500 fans.
"The distractions of Senior Night are always a challenge," Illinois coach Kevin Hambly said. "But we handled it well and took care of business."
With its 14th win in 15 matches, Illinois improved to 15-3 in the Big Ten and 23-4 overall. The Illini are in position to host first- and second-round NCAA tournament matches in December.
"We set a goal of playing our best in December, and that is almost here," Hambly said. "I think the perception of how well we're capable of playing keeps getting higher and higher. I think we could have played a little better tonight, but we're working harder to reach a new standard."
The UI honored seniors Kylie McCulley and Ashley Edinger.
Laura DeBruler, celebrating her 21st birthday, responded with 18 kills. The junior had seven kills in the third set and added seven digs.
Michelle Bartsch chipped in with nine kills and 12 digs, second only to Rachel Feldman (14).
"Laura hit a couple of balls tonight that I don't think many players in the country can hit," Hambly said.
The Illini had five aces, giving them 16 aces in six sets this weekend.
"We were doing a good job of serving aggressively," DeBruler said. "Everyone was getting after it on the serve."
JSM Challenger
Russell wins singles title. Michael Russell beat Taylor Dent 7-5, 6-4 to win his first JSM Challenger title at Atkins Tennis Center.
Brian and Dann Battistone beat Treat Huey and Harsh Mankad for the doubles title.
"The distractions of Senior Night are always a challenge," Illinois coach Kevin Hambly said. "But we handled it well and took care of business."
Why would this be a challenge? Senior night should be a BIG DEAL to the players so that to honor their accomplishments as students earning degrees while playing sports. Its the college experience as compared to prosports which is a job!
Hence, senior night adds to the game and college sports programs! Go Illini!!
