Penn State sweeps in volleyball

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – It's 91 matches and counting for Penn State.

The top-ranked Nittany Lions defeated fifth-ranked Illinois 25-20, 27-25, 25-15 on Friday night before 4,163 spectators, snapping the Illini's 11-match winning streak.

That streak was Illinois' best since the 1992 squad won 22 consecutive matches.

Laura DeBruler had 18 kills and seven digs for the Illini, who received 29 assists from Hillary Haen.

Rachel Feldman had nine digs, Clinton product Kylie McCulley eight and Michelle Bartsch seven for Illinois (20-4, 12-3 Big Ten).

Penn State, which received 39 assists from Alisha Glass and 17 kills from Blair Brown, improved to 27-0, 15-0.

Glass paced the Nittany Lions' offense to a .350 hitting percentage. Junior Arielle Wilson finished second on the team in kills with nine and blocks with three. Junior Fatima Balza led the team with four total blocks, and junior Alyssa D'Errico posted a team-high 11 digs.

The Nittany Lions finished with 48 kills, five aces, 47 digs and 7.0 total team blocks. The Illini posted 37 kills, three aces, 36 digs and 4.0 team blocks. Penn State held Illinois to .189 hitting.

Penn State took a 2-1 lead in the opening set after an Illinois error and a kill by Glass, but the Illini tied it up at 3. The Nittany Lions then took the lead for good after Brown's first kill.
