Feldman, Illini dig deep

CHAMPAIGN – It apparently will take more than a season-ending injury to its career digs leader to slow down the Illinois volleyball express.

Playing for the first time without record-setting libero Ashley Edinger, the No. 5 Illini didn't skip a beat Friday night at Huff Hall en route to their 10th victory in a row.

With sophomore Rachel Feldman more than capably filling in for Edinger, Illinois fended off No. 15 Michigan 25-27, 25-22, 25-21, 25-17 to sweep the season series.

The victory came days after the Illini learned the full extent of Edinger's left knee injury – an ACL tear – suffered last Saturday at Purdue.

"To try to figure out in basically two days how we're going to play together, I thought it was a gut-check match for us," UI coach Kevin Hambly said. "I'm proud of the way the girls performed and the way they dealt with that adversity."

Feldman played no small role in that performance. In her first collegiate start, the second-year walk-on from Normal Community came through with a team-high-tying 19 digs and withstood unrelenting targeting by Michigan's servers. Of the Wolverines' 79 serves, 41 were at Feldman, who did not commit an error on any.

"The first 10 to 20 serves probably were at her," Hambly said. "They attacked her every way they possibly could – hitting at her, serving her – and she did a great job. They said, 'Rachel, you're new. Beat us.' And I thought she did."

Feldman entered the night having appeared in 11 of Illinois' 46 sets this season and had two digs.

"We have such great team chemistry that I wasn't as nervous as I thought I would be," she said. "A lot of the players on our team do more than they're known for. Our hitters can set, our hitters can pass, so I had a lot of confidence ... That really helps having a really versatile team that can help you out in any way."

The Illini (19-3, 11-2 Big Ten) gained momentum with each set, capping off the 2-hour, 16- minute battle by scoring 14 of the final 18 points in Set 4.

Outside hitter Laura DeBruler fueled the Illinois attack with a match-high 21 kills on a night when no other Illini reached double figures in that category.

Instead, the Illini racked up the double-digit totals on the defensive end. Five Illinois players had at least 13 digs, with sophomore right-side hitter Michelle Bartsch setting a career high while matching Feldman's 19.

Michigan (19-7, 7-6) was scrappy, too, in digging up kill attempts. Led by libero Sloane Donhoff's 29 digs, the Wolverines finished with 81 compared to Illinois' 85.

But Illinois, as it did in the teams' first meeting this season, dominated at the net. After outblocking Michigan 15-3 on Oct. 3 in Ann Arbor, the Illini held a 17-6 blocking edge this time.

Illinois middle blocker Johannah Bangert racked up 12 block assists – one short of the school record she shares. Bartsch contributed nine block assists to tie her career high.

"It was definitely a full team win," DeBruler said. "They're a great team, and I'm just glad we came out and fought."
