Arkansas handles Illinois

No. 22 Illinois fell to a ranked volleyball team for the second consecutive match, losing in four games to No. 16 Arkansas on Friday at the Arkansas Invitational.

The Illini (6-2), who lost to No. 1 Penn State last Saturday, fell 15-12, 13-15, 15-12, 15-7.

"Arkansas played with incredible defensive effort," UI coach Don Hardin said.

Cristy Chapman and Tracey Marshall each had 21 kills for the Illini.

In women's soccer:

Baldwin shines.

Freshman forward Lisa Baldwin scored a hat trick to lift Illinois to a 5-1 victory over host Ohio State on Friday in its Big Ten Conference opener.

The Illini improved to 5-0 after outshooting the Buckeyes 24-6.

"Any game within the Big Ten is a big game," UI coach Jillian Ellis said.

At 1 p.m. Sunday in Champaign, Illinois hosts No. 8 Penn State.

"It's going to be another level. We're getting better as a team. We're definitely going to have our hands full on Sunday," Ellis said.

Baldwin scored one first-half goal and two second-half goals. She gave the Illini a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute, when freshman Heidi Holtzman crossed a ball into the middle and Baldwin drilled a shot past Buckeyes goalie Amber Barnes.

In men's golf:

Illini in second.

D.A. Points followed a 72 with a 4-under 67 on Friday as Illinois moved into a second-place tie at the Northern Intercollegiate in Minneapolis.

Playing two rounds, the UI finished the day 1 under to tie Wisconsin at 567. Minnesota leads the 12-team field at 548.

Points is tied for ninth in the individual standings. Mark Henderson is 16th and Ed Parga 31st.

In women's tennis:

Illini on roll.

Opening its season at the Eck Tennis Classic at Notre Dame, Illinois won nine of 10 singles matches and all three doubles matches.

"This is a great start for us," UI coach Sujay Lama said.

Stacy Shapiro and Simone Kung advanced to the third round in the top singles flight. In the second flight, Megan Wise and Brooke Ferney advanced to the quarterfinals.

The teams of Shapiro-Ferney and Kung-Wise advanced in doubles.
