Illini volleyball drops third in row

Changes will be made.

That's Illinois volleyball coach Don Hardin's promise after the Illini lost their third straight match, falling to Big Ten foe Iowa for the first time since 1994 3-0 Saturday in Iowa City, Iowa.

Actually, there already have been, starting with Friday's loss to Minnesota and continuing against Iowa.

After losing the first game Saturday 15-6, the UI trailed 10-4 in the second game. In came Heather Wilson at setter, Carrie Cavato for defense and Paula Prentice at outside hitter. The Illini tied it at 13 before falling 15-13. With substitutes still in, Illinois lost the third game 15-3.

"Our second unit came in and almost sparked us back to victory in the second game," Hardin said.

But that just points out the problems the starters have been having. Hardin is looking for answers.

"It's not the system we're running, it's not their athletic ability," he said. "It's not what were doing. I wouldn't trade a player on our team for anyone across the net.

"It's just basically a disheartened attitude."

Freshman Betsy Spicer led the Illini, 12-8 overall and 3-7 Big Ten, with 12 kills. Tracy Marshall had 11 and Cristy Chapman nine. Melissa Beitz had 29 assists and Wilson 10 against Iowa, 9-11 and 2-7.

In swimming: UI wins two.

Erin Diddle won twice and was part of a winning relay team as Illinois won a double dual meet with host Penn State and Villanova.

Diddle won the 100 and 200 backstroke races and was part of the winning 200 medley relay team. Illinois beat Villanova 199-99 and beat Penn State 165-134.
