FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Andrew Riley capped an impressive freshman season at Illinois with another All-America honor.
The Jamaican finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles at the NCAA Championships on Saturday.
"I feel great," Riley said. "Performancewise I didn't get to the time I wanted, but to be an All-American for the second time is pretty awesome."
Riley, who had a sixth-place finish in the 60 hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Championships, was clocked in 13.83 seconds to record the UI's second All-America performance at the outdoor meet. On Friday, Greg Shroka was sixth in the high jump.
"He ran a very strong race and got off to a great start," UI coach Wayne Angel said. "When he sets his mind to something he can accomplish anything. I'm very happy for him. He and Shroka both came and accomplished what they were supposed to."
Riley's debut season included a Big Ten title (60 hurdles) and school records in the 60 and 110 hurdles.
"Coming here in January from Jamaica, you wouldn't think someone would be able to do what he did this year, having to make a big transition and get used to the academics," Angel said. "Riley exceeded far and above what I expected him to do, and he's not done yet. He had a heck of a season."
The highlight of the meet for Illinois was Angela Bizzarri's NCAA title in the 5,000 on Friday night. The race favorite finished in a personal-best 16:17.94.
"She has never really been in this situation before, having the pressure of being No. 1 coming in," UI distance coach Jeremy Rasmussen said. "She has shown in the past year she can run with anyone."
Sparked by Bizzarri, the Illini finished tied for 12th, the program's best team finish since tying for 10th in 2002. Illinois' ranking was second among Big Ten teams, behind seventh-place Michigan. Texas A&M won the team title.
with 50 points.
