Illinois' Brown earns crown in hurdles
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Illinois' Deserea Brown finished first Saturday in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Mideast track and field regional, clocking 57.00 seconds.
Teammate Latoya Griffith was third in the event in 57.87.
In men's action, Illinois' Andrew Riley was second in the 110 hurdles, finishing in 13.74.
Teammate Andrew Zollner took second in the pole vault, reaching 17 feet, 3 inches.
In other women's action, the Illini's Chantelle Groenewoud claimed fourth in the 3,000 steeplechase, clocking 10 minutes, 33.84 seconds.
In men's golf:
Texas A&M victorious. Hands on his hips, Texas A&M's Bronson Burgoon stood over a ball nestled deep in the rough and 120 yards from the hole.
Nothing much was riding on his next shot – just a national championship.
With one mighty hack, Burgoon gave Texas A&M its first national title in men's golf. His gap wedge soared into the wind, landed on the green and tracked toward the hole before coming to rest 3 inches away.
"I couldn't have drawn it up any better," the senior said, a wide grin plastered across his tanned face. "This is better than any dream I ever had in my life."
Burgoon, the Aggies' No. 1 player, had lost the previous four holes to Arkansas' Andrew Landry before hitting from the deep rough far to the right of the 18th fairway.
Landry conceded the tap-in for birdie, then missed a 35-footer that finalized A&M's 3-and-2 victory in Toledo, Ohio.
"He (Burgoon) pulled off the best shot of the tournament," heartbroken Razorbacks coach Brad McMakin said.
In baseball:
Gophers alive, Hoosiers out. Justin Gominsky had four hits, scored twice, drove in two runs and added an inning-ending diving catch to help Minnesota stay alive in the NCAA tournament with an 11-8 victory against Southern on Saturday in Baton Rouge, La.
Matt Nohelty and A.J. Pettersen each had three hits and two RBI for the Gophers, who advanced to today's losers' bracket final while eliminating the Jaguars (30-17).
Gominsky was 4 for 4 with a stolen base and a sacrifice. His hits included a triple and double, the latter plating two runs in the top of the seventh against reliever Daniel Garcia to give Minnesota (39-18) an 8-3 lead.
"I just tried to go out there and not do too much," Gominsky said. "I got some good pitches to hit and was able to make the most out of them."
Meantime, Vanderbilt pitcher Sonny Gray gave up seven hits and struck out 10 as the Commodores defeated Indiana 10-0 in an elimination game in Louisville.
Hoosiers starter Matt Bashore (7-5) gave up eight hits and seven earned runs in four-plus innings.
In softball:
Georgia tops Michigan. Taylor Schlopy hit two of Georgia's four home runs during a record-setting day for SEC offenses at the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
Schlopy became the fourth player in World Series history to homer twice in one game, and the sixth-seeded Bulldogs set a Series record with four home runs in a game while overcoming a three-run deficit to beat Michigan 7-5 Saturday.
Schlopy's three-run blast into the left field stands off Nikki Nemitz (28-7) put Georgia on top 5-3 in the second inning, and Ashley Pauly and Brianna Hesson also homered.
Christie Hamilton (26-9) came on in relief and picked up her second win of the day despite having a series of illegal pitches called against her.
Roya St. Clair homered and drove in three runs to lead the Michigan (47-12) offense.
The Bulldogs (46-11) will take on third-seeded Washington in the semifinals today, needing to beat the Huskies twice to reach the best-of-three championship series. Washington beat Georgia 3-1 on Thursday.
Alabama beat eight-time national champion Arizona 14-0 Saturday, setting records for the most runs and biggest margin of victory in a World Series game, but it needed to win another elimination game against defending champion Arizona State to reach today's semifinals.
Hamilton was called for five illegal pitches after her delivery came into question against Missouri earlier in the day. She was called once in that game for stepping out of the pitching lane defined by chalk lines in the pitcher's circle.
