LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Greg Shroka placed fourth in the high jump at Friday's NCAA Mideast Regional Championships to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Shroka cleared a career-best 7 feet, 1 inch, the second-best performance in Illinois history to Gail Olson's 7-3 1/2. The junior will be the first Illini to high jump at the NCAAs since Olson in 1979.
"Greg has been striving for nationals his whole career and now that it's a reality I couldn't be happier for him," UI coach Wayne Angel said.
In women's action, OAngela Bizzarri won the 5,000 meters for the second straight year to advance to the NCAAs. With the win, Bizzarri becomes Illinois' seventh regional champion since the meets started in 2003 - and the program's first two-time winner.
"Angela was superb today," UI coach Tonja Buford-Bailey said. "I think she's well on her way to improving on last year's second-place finish at the NCAA championships."
