Nevolo opens indoor nationals with win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Illinois’ Dennis Nevolo defeated South Carolina’s Diego Cubas 6-1, 6-2 Thursday in the opening round of the ITA National Indoor Championships.

The Illini sophomore will face Michael Shabaz of Virginia in the round of 16 today. The winner advances to tonight’s quarterfinals. Shabaz upset eighth-seeded Eric Quigley of Kentucky 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) in his opener.

In doubles, Nevolo and teammate Marek Czerwinski opened with an 8-6 loss to the third-seeded tandem of Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher of Stanford.
