Illini tennis player out at Open
Brady Blain's Grand Slam tennis debut has been pushed back.
The University of Illinois senior was eliminated from qualifying play for the U.S. Open Friday night at the USTA National Tennis Center in New York.
Blain and twin brother Brook fell 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 to Mexico's Oscar Ortiz and Brazil's Andre Ha, who are both ranked among the world's top 150 doubles players.
"They got a good taste of what they need to do to play professional tennis and they gained a lot from the experience," Illinois coach Craig Tiley said. "Just getting here and playing against some of the top amateurs in the world is something to be proud of."
The Blain brothers earned a spot in the qualifier after winning the U.S. National Amateur doubles title last weekend in Bloomington, Ind.
