Mon, July 14: Illini prevail in ITA tournament
University of Illinois tennis players past and present won singles and doubles titles Sunday in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Summer Circuit Tournament at Atkins Tennis Center.
Third-seeded Jakub Teply, a junior-to-be at the UI, defeated unseeded Tim Hammond of Arizona State 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 in the men''s singles final. Teply won 10 of 12 sets in his five matches after receiving a first-round bye.
In the men''s doubles final, UI sophomore-to-be Jeff Laski combined with recent Illini graduate Jerry Turek to defeat twins Brady and Brook Blain 6-4, 6-1. Brady will be a senior at the UI next season, and Brook attends Michigan.
Turek, the top seed, won the men''s singles consolation bracket by defeating Ricardo Jordan of Indiana. In the men''s doubles consolation bracket, Urbana University High graduate Alex Hobson and Parkland College''s Shaun Peterson won the title in three sets.
