URBANA – A day after defeating Toledo and Ball State, the No. 15 Illinois men's tennis team kept the momentum going with a 6-1 rout of No. 14 Pepperdine on Saturday at Atkins Tennis Center.
The Illini claimed all three doubles matches before No. 101 Marc Spicijaric upset Pepperdine's 57th-ranked Mahmoud Kamel in straight sets in singles action.
Other singles winners for the Illini included No. 23 Roy Kalmanovich, Ruan Roelofse, Marek Czerwinski and Northern Illinois transfer Brian Livingston.
"Tonight was a good win for us. I'm happy to get the season started on the right foot," Illinois coach Brad Dancer said. "This win definitely gives us a confidence boost."
In women's tennis:
Illini sharp at tourney. Leigh Finnegan, Megan Fudge, Chelcie Abajian, Amy Allin and Shivani Dave each came away with singles victories against Central Florida on Saturday during the first day of action at the Johan Kriek Tennis Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.
In women's gymnastics:
Cowart takes all-around. Illinois' Nicole Cowart took all-around honors and Sarah Schmidt won the floor exercise and uneven parallel bars to lead the Illini to a 195.500-192.925 victory against Penn State on Saturday at Huff Hall.
Kelsey Joannides won the balance beam event for the Illini.
In swimming and diving:
UI falls just short. Illinois' Jen Ivarson (2 minutes, 6.92 seconds), Ali Keehn (2:07.36) and Ann Miller (2:09.20) took the top three spots in the 200 butterfly Saturday, but it wasn't enough in a 157-143 dual-meet loss to Iowa in Champaign.
Keehn won the 100 fly with Brittany McGowan taking second and Ivarson finishing third to sweep the event for the Illini, who had to rally to make the meet competitive after a slow start.
"In the beginning of the meet we were getting our clocks cleaned," UI coach Sue Novitsky said. "But we kept swimming hard. ... In the last few races we showed a lot of character."
In women's track and field:
Robinson strong. Illinois' Tamika Robinson finished second in the 60-meter dash, third in the 60 hurdles and fifth in the 200 on Saturday at the Indiana Open.
In men's track and field:
Miller fast. Illinois' Gary Miller won the 800 (1:52.46) Saturday at the Kentucky Invitational. Miller was the Illini's lone event winner.
Gakologelwang Masheto placed second in the 400 at 47.07. He was 0.03 second off the winner's time.
In club hockey:
Illini swept. Daniel Cohen and Johnny Liang scored two goals apiece in the second period for all of Illinois' scoring in a 5-4 loss Saturday at Penn State.
