Homenock, Illini swamp Hawkeyes

Illinois started strong and didn't look back in beating Iowa in the second of a two-day meet Saturday at the IMPE pool.

The UI opened with a victory in the 400 medley relay, Kathy Kielty, Darcy Adler, Nicola Homenock and Emily Wang winning in 3 minutes, 54.05 seconds.

The Illini, who took a 120-66 lead after Friday's session, won the meet 2111/2-1391/2.

Homenock was a big reason why.

A senior, Homenock also won the 500 freestyle in 4:58.85 and tied for a victory in the 100 butterfly in 57.12.

"I'm real pleased with the meet from start to finish," UI coach Jim Lutz said.

Other individual winners for Illinois were Jodi Smith in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.03), Anna Christiansen in the 400 individual medley (4:31.90) and Wang in the 100 freestyle (52.24).

In wrestling:

Illini place.

Three Illinois wrestlers placed Saturday in the Northern Iowa Invitational. Freshman Matt Lackey was third at 165 pounds after beating Northern Iowa's Nate Laurenz 8-4. Senior Dan Catarello (157) was fifth with a 9-5 victory against UNI's Keith Weber. And sophomore John Lockhard (heavyweight) lost 9-3 to Mike Russow to take sixth.
