STORRS, Conn. — The Illinois soccer team absorbed its first loss of the season when Jessica Shufelt scored 3 minutes, 8 seconds into the second overtime, lifting Connecticut to a 2-1 victory Friday.
The goal was Shufelt’s second of the match and third of the season.
Illinois (3-1) erased a 1-0 deficit when Jordan Hilbrands converted a corner kick in the 72nd minute. Marissa Mykines and Danielle Kot assisted on Hilbrands’ second goal of the season.
The Illini outshot UConn (1-2-1) 19-11 and had an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
“We created enough chances to be successful and made enough mistakes to lose,” UI coach Janet Rayfield said. “UConn played a style that put us under pressure. They were going to capitalize on any mistakes we made.”
