AUGSBURG, Germany — Abby Wambach’s goal led the United States to a 1-0 victory against world champion Germany on Thursday in a women’s soccer friendly.
Wambach scored for the Olympic gold medalists in the 34th minute after capitalizing on a defensive mistake by the Germans.
Former Illini All-American Ella Masar was one of two reserves on the U.S. roster who received playing time. The Urbana native entered in the 73rd minute in place of forward Amy Rodriguez and played the rest of the match. It was Masar’s first match action with the U.S. Senior National women’s team.
Germany is the host of the 2011 World Cup. The match was played before a capacity crowd of 28,367 in the new Impuls Arena.
