Coming to the '09 Shootout: Quality Education Academy
Each Monday, we'll introduce a team participating in the IlliniHQ Shootout at the Hall presented by State Farm Insurance, our annual boys' basketball extravaganza which this year takes place Dec. 12 at the Assembly Hall.
Today: Quality Education Academy of Winston-Salem, N.C., home of Illini recruiting target Quincy Miller, perhaps the best player in this year's field.
Here's the scoop:
Quality Education Academy
City: Winston-Salem, N.C.
Enrollment: 300
Nickname: Fighting Pharaohs
Shootout appearance: First
Three things to know about Quality Education Academy, courtesy staff writer Paul Klee:
1. Coach Isaac Pitts, who also serves as the school's athletics director, said the Fighting Pharaohs have a 12-man roster and "all of them" have Division I potential. Pitts said the team plays a national schedule that includes events from Florida to Atlanta to Washington D.C. to Champaign. Opponents next season include powerhouse programs like Oak Hill (Va.) Academy and Mt. Zion (N.C.) Christian Academy. Pitts said Quality Education also is scheduled to compete in a Thanksgiving tournament in the Chicago area. "We'll be in Illinois twice," he said.
2. Quality Education's Quincy Miller is the top prospect in our Shootout field, at least in terms of recruiting rankings. The 6-foot-7 small forward is a top-10 recruit by Scout.com and Rivals.com. "He's the No. 1 small forward in the country," Pitts said of the 2011 prospect. "He can do everything. Can handle the ball, pure shooter, put it on the floor, has a 7-2 wingspan. You name it, he can do it." Miller has over 100 scholarship offers, including an offer from Illinois. "He won't play four years in college, unless he chooses to," Pitts said.
3. So how is Illinois in the mix for a player living in the heart of ACC country? Miller is from Chicago. He probably will have family in attendance at the Shootout, Pitts said. "Illinois has as good a chance as everybody else. Whoever makes themselves special (will be the choice)," Pitts said. "He's from Chicago, so pulling him from Tobacco Road, that's not going to be pulling him from Tobacco Road. He's born and bred in Chicago." Be patient, though, and don't expect a college decision in the near future. "He's going to commit his senior year," Pitts said. "Offers are on the table, they're still going to be on the table next year."
