Women golfers win own tourney
The Illinois women's golf team had three of the top seven finishers Sunday in winning the 12-team Illini Spring Classic.
The Illini won their first event since April 23, 1995, with a two-day total of 626, 2 shots better than Notre Dame and 15 in front of Eastern Michigan. After building a 2-shot lead in the first round, Illinois and the Fighting Irish each carded a 316 in the second round.
Freshman Lorette Lyttle led Illinois with a second-place 154, 1 shot behind Notre Dame medalist Tracy Melby. Ashley Webb tied for fifth at 157, Jillian Sitter was seventh at 158, Michelle Lin tied for 13th at 160 and Jacqueline Rubin tied for 18th at 161.
In men's tennis:
Illinois senior Jerry Turek broke the school record for singles victories with his 104th as the Illini pounded Minnesota 5-1.
Turek beat the Badgers' Ben Gabler 6-4, 6-3 to break Mark Long's record from 1988. In the last match of the regular season, Turek, 31-10, also tied his own single-season victory mark.
Other Illinois winners were: Cary Franklin, Oliver Freelove and Jeff Laski. The No. 3 doubles team of Freelove and Kevin Schwartz also won for Illinois, 15-9 overall and 7-3 in the Big Ten Conference.
In baseball:
The Illinois baseball team took a 3-0 first-inning lead against Penn State but allowed seven runs in the bottom of the first and lost 13-3 at State College, Pa.
Illinois starting pitcher Mitch Walk, 1-2, lasted one-third of an inning, allowing five earned runs on five hits.
The Nittany Lions, 22-17 overall, 7-7 Big Ten, outhit the Illini 22-6. Illinois fell to 18-25, 9-11.
In women's tennis:
Illinois fell 5-2 to Indiana at Atkins Tennis Center in its regular season finale. Stacy Shapiro was the only singles winner, beating Megan McCarney 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 1 match.
The Illini finished 10-12 overall, 5-5 Big Ten.
