Hurricanes take doubleheader against Illinois
The University of Miami baseball team improved to 16-10 with a doubleheader sweep against Illinois, 4-7, on Saturday at Coral Gables, Fla.
Miami won the opener 5-2 despite being outhit by the Illini 9-7. The Hurricanes took advantage of five Illinois errors and six walks.
In the second game, Miami pounded five Illinois pitchers for 16 hits in a 12-1 win. Illini freshman pitcher Tim Lavery fell to 1-2, giving up eight hits and six earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.
In men's tennis: Illini split.
After beating Texas Christian 4-3 at the Blue Gray Classic in Montgomery, Ala., the UI lost to Notre Dame 4-3 for the second time this season.
Oliver Freelove and Cary Franklin won singles and doubles matches against TCU. Against the Irish, Franklin was the lone UI singles winner.
Illinois is 7-5 in duals.
In women's tennis: Michigan State 9, Illinois 0.
In East Lansing, Mich., the Illini were shut out for the second time this season. Illinois is 6-6 overall, 1-2 Big Ten.
In women's golf: UI 13th.
The Illini shot a final-round 341 to finish at 667 in the Fairway Network Snowbird Intercollegiate at Tampa, Fla.
In women's gymnastics: Berres ties best.
Illini Kim Berres tied her career best with a 9.9 to win the balance beam at a four-team meet in Chicago. Illinois finished fourth in the meet. Illinois-Chicago took first.
