Hire learning: Ex-Illini weighing in

Illinois football beat writer Bob Asmussen weighs in on the search for Ron Zook's replacement:

Former Illini are interested in what's going on at their school. David Williams, the best receiver in Illinois history, called me this morning to find out what direction the search is going. Earlier in the year, Williams said he thought the team wasn't as good as its 6-0 record indicated and counted on only one more win, against Minnesota. That didn't happen. Williams and his former Illinois teammates are willing to help the next coach. During Zook's tenure, Williams would recommend talented players in the Los Angeles area but didn't get much of a response. The next coach, Williams said, has to return to the state that helped build Mike White's program.

Neuheisel is available and he recruits SoCal.  Worth a look.

. . . and carries more baggage than United Airlines and Newt Gingrich combined.

I've got baggage.  You've got baggage.  We've all got baggage.  Neuheisel was squeaky clean at UCLA and learned a hard lesson.  What's life without a second chance?

There is only one great candidate and that is Chuck Martin. Two time D2 winner at Grand Valley State and currently the recruiting coordinator and safeties coach at ND. This is the GUY period. Go get him Mike Thomas. He went to Millikin and Rich East High School.
