Big welcome for Leonard
ROBINSON – His future college team being left out of the NCAA tournament aside, Meyers Leonard had a pretty good day Sunday.
Leonard and his Robinson teammates returned home Sunday morning after he helped lead the Maroons to the Class 2A state title the night before. They were greeted by adoring fans at every turn.
"It's been pretty exciting. We had a pretty good day with all the fans coming out and everything," the 7-foot Illinois signee said. "When we were coming back today at about Greenup – which is about 45 minutes away – we had about 100 cars following us, and we got to Robinson and everybody was lining the streets. It was crazy. We got back to the high school and the gym was packed with our fans."
Back at the high school, the Maroons were treated to a trophy presentation in front of their fans, and Leonard said he spoke to the crowd and thanked people for their support and expressed amazement at Sunday's turnout.
"I thought it was gonna be pretty exciting, but nothing that big," said Leonard, who had 16 points and 15 rebounds in the overtime championship win against Peoria Manual. "It was completely over the top from anything I've ever thought about."
Before arriving on campus this summer, Leonard will pitch for Robinson's baseball team.
"Hopefully we continue that success from basketball," he said.
I liked what I saw out of Leonard. Especially the physicality and the tough attitude he displayed. Probably could have been T'd up a couple of times but he was aggressive and showed a mean streak which the current Illini squad does not have. Hopefully he will add some weight and be an physical inside force in the future. Looked like he has pretty good athleticism and agility, shot free throws pretty well and his moves in the post will get better.
