PEORIA — A once-popular basketball talent analyst with a history of robbery and theft has been indicted by a federal grand jury for bank robbery again.

Stephen D. Wacaser, 57, no address available, was indicted Wednesday for the Oct. 19 robbery of the Regions Bank in Decatur and the Oct. 20 robbery of the Illini Bank in Sherman.

At the time of his arrest, Wacaser was on federal parole for bank larceny and bank robbery. He was also on state parole for a 2007 conviction for robbery out of Rock Island County. He was released from the Illinois Department of Corrections on that offense Aug. 14.

Just two months later, he is alleged to have robbed the banks in Macon and Sangamon counties.

In the late 1990's, Wacaser, formerly of Springfield, was an informed and well-regarded spokesman in the prep basketball arena. He was a frequent guest on WDWS Radio sports programs and source for News-Gazette basketball recruiting articles.

He admitted to News-Gazette columnist Loren Tate in 2003 that his criminal problems stemmed from a gambling addiction.

If convicted of the most recent offenses, Wacaser faces up to 20 years in prison on each.
