CHAMPAIGN - After a season of mostly good health, the Illini hit a rough patch this offseason.
The latest bugaboo is a knee injury to freshman Joseph Bertrand. Coach Bruce Weber said this afternoon Bertrand aggravated a knee injury during a workout Monday night at the team's practice facility.
The UI announced later today that Bertrand will undergo arthroscopic surgery Friday. A timetable for his return will be determined after the operation. Before it was confirmed Bertrand will need surgery, Weber had estimated the freshman could be sidelined anywhere from 2-to-6 weeks.
Bertrand was bothered by the knee earlier in the summer. The 6-foot-5 guard had been performing well in workouts and often was a bright spot in summer pickup games.
"He's very talented. He's very long. The strength is a factor a little bit and some footwork things," Weber said. "But I think Joseph has shown that he's as talented as some of those other guys."
UI forward Mike Davis sustained a broken ankle in June but has fully recovered. He has participated in all of the team's four-man workouts.
"I don't even notice anything (has dropped off with Davis)," Weber said.
