Gymnasts Stannard, Haagensen impress at nationals

DALLAS – Illinois gymnast Luke Stannard won the pommel horse and former
Illinois gymnast Wes Haagensen finished third in the all-around Friday at
the Visa Championships.

Stannard, a senior-to-be and the reigning Big Ten champion in the pommel
horse, scored 15.500 points to finish the two-day meet with 30.650 to
capture the USA Gymnastics national title.

Haagensen earned a bronze medal with an all-around total of 178.000
points. He also tied for third in still rings (30.850), and was fifth in high bar
(29.200) and seventh in parallel bars (29.700).

Illini junior-to-be Daniel Ribeiro tied for fourth place in pommel horse (30.150) and shared sixth in floor exercise (29.700).

Paul Ruggeri, another UI junior-to-be, tied for 17th in all-around (170.300).
