Haagensen near leaders

DALLAS — Former Illini gymnast Wes Haagensen placed in the top three in two events and was tied for fourth place in the all-around Wednesday after the opening day of the Visa Championships.
Haagensen recorded the second-highest score in the parallel bars (15.250) and the third highest in still rings (15.450) en route to an all-around total of 88.350.
Illini junior-to-be Daniel Ribeiro recorded the top score in pommel horse (15.900), while teammate Luke Stannard placed third in that event (15.150).
Illini Paul Ruggeri, a junior-to-be, was 16th in the all-around at 85.100. His highest score came in vault (15.700).
The finals of the men’s competition will be at 7 p.m. Friday.
