Golfers continue winning ways
GLENCOE -- The Illinois men's golf team earned its second straight victory in the Windon Memorial Classic on Monday with a 6-shot win against host Northwestern.
Illinois finished the 54-hole tournament at 16-over-par at Skokie Country Club. After a first-round total of 13-over 297, the Illini rebounded with a 285 in the second round and a 286 in the final round.
"It just shows the resiliency of this club," UI coach Mike Small said. "We had five good, solid players who have made winning a habit and we closed like champions."
Scott Langley, ranked No. 2 in the country in the Golfweek/Sagarin computer rankings, tied for third at 3-over-par. He was 2 strokes behind co-medalists Brett Cairns of Kent State and Dan Obremski of Coastal Carolina.
The Illini's final round included a 69 from Luke Guthrie. He finished in a tie for fifth at 5-over. Matt Hoffman tied for ninth at 6-over.
The title was Illinois' second in three fall tournaments.
Women 10th after two rounds. Hailey Koschmann (4-over 148) is tied for 23rd entering today's final round of the Windy City Classic in Glenview.
The Illini are 10th in the 15-team field.
