SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. — Illinois men’s golf coach Mike Small won the 42nd PGA Professional National Championship on Wednesday, using a birdie on the par-5 16th to propel him to victory.
It was Small’s second title at the event, which he also won in 2005.
With the victory, Small earned a spot in the PGA Championship, scheduled Aug. 13-16 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.
“This is huge,” Small said. “It validates the one I had four years ago. ... It also brings credibility to our program.”
