Points, Illini start strong

D.A. Points carded a first-round 72 to help lead Illinois to a ninth-place tie after the first day of the NCAA Central Golf Regional on Thursday in Columbus, Ohio.

Points is 5 strokes behind leader Martin Maritz of Tulsa.

Minnesota leads the team standings at 283, and the Illini are at 297 with Oklahoma State and North Texas. The top 10 teams advance to the NCAA Championships June 2-5.

Lockhart picked for Big Ten team

Illinois wrestler John Lockhart, a freshman from Mahomet-Seymour, has been chosen to compete in the Big Ten's freestyle wrestling dual against Ukraine on Sunday at State College, Pa.

Lockhart is one of 11 Big Ten wrestlers to face the Ukrainian team. The team is coached by Penn State's Troy Sunderland.
