Illinois golfer points toward State Am title

Illini golfer D.A. Points shot 1-over-par 72 in the first round of the Illinois State Amateur Championship on Tuesday at Rend Lake Golf Course in Whittington.
Points, the state am champion in 1995, trails leaders Scott Wille of Dundee and Van Salmans of Chicago by 2 strokes.
Dave Holzner of Mahomet was 1-over after 13 holes before finishing at 78. Champaign's Zach McNabney, who finished in the top 15 of last year's state am to earn an automatic berth into the field, shot 8-over 79.
Greg Morgan of LeRoy finished at 82.
Golfers will play 18 holes today before the field is trimmed to the low 30 plus ties for the final 36 holes Thursday.
