Beckman undecided about Camp Rantoul
Tim Beckman has heard the question. More than a few times: "Are you going to continue Camp Rantoul?"
And the answer is ...
"We have not come to a true decision," Beckman said. "I've never done it. I want to go up there (to check it out). I think it's got some unique advantages, but then there are some other things I like to do just staying here."
Continuing training camp in Rantoul would make it more difficult to limit information on the team.
"A little bit of that, to be honest with you," Beckman said. "We do have a little bit of a surprise issue."
In the next few weeks, Beckman plans to tour the Camp Rantoul facilities with his staff.
"We're going to make a decision that's best for the University of Illinois football team," Beckman said.
Beckman has talked to the players about Camp Rantoul and received an array of opinions.
"Some love it, and some don't," Beckman said.
Bob Asmussen
I'm surprised he's questioning this. I remember hearing last year from Bob that many pro scouts and former players thought the setup was awesome... very much like an NFL training camp. There's a reason why NFL teams do this, to limit distractions and focus on the team. There's so many distractions on campus in the summer.
We need this team to come firing out of the gates this year and I hope we continue to go, learn, fight and come together as a team at Camp Rantoul.
We're not really already second-guessing the new coach not committing to a place where he may or may not want to hold practice before he even looks at it, are we? I mean, we're talking about practice. We're not talking about the game, we're up here talking about practice.
