Prosch status uncertain

The future of Jay Prosch at Illinois is unclear.

According to a story in today's Mobile (Ala.) Press-Register, the fullback Jay Prosch is leaving the Illinois football program. http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/01/former_ums-star_jay_prosch_pla.html

But Illinois sports information director Kent Brown said today that Prosch is enrolled at Illinois and is expected to participate in spring practices with the team.

Illinois has given Prosch permission to talk to about 20 schools, mostly in the South, so he can be closer to his ailing mother. Iris Prosch is battling brain cancer.

All of the SEC schools are on the list, except for Arkansas. That's where Paul Petrino is now the offensive coordinator. Illinois doesn't want to set a precedent in allowing scholarship players to follow departed coaches.

Other schools on the list include UAB, South Alabama, Troy and Louisiana-Lafayette.

Prosch missed the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl because of a staph infection.

New Illinois coach Tim Beckman is changing to a spread offense, which doesn't use a fullback. Beckman would likely try Prosch as an H-back or tight end. Switching to defense has also been mentioned as a possibility for Prosch, who was a standout linebacker in high school.

Gee, more evidence that the Sleepy Gazoo gets its news by reading other papers.

Fairly long story based upon interviews with Jay and his mom.  Go to the press register web site to read it.  Also interesting that apparently UI can control his release related to the school he chooses. Arkansas isn't on the list as the article indicates that UI doesn't want people following Petrino.

Somehow that doesn't sound right. A player wants to be close to his ailing mother but Illinois doesn't want to set a precedent of compassion and flexibility if the best school for Prosch is Arkansas, despite Petrino being there. What a lame, inconsiderate stance.

Leave it to PeterE to always say something negative about the Illini.

We all feel for Jay and wish the best for his mother.  If his real reason for leaving Illinois is to be closer to his mother in Mobile, AL then going from ~780 miles and a 13 hour drive from Champaign to ~630 miles and an 11 hour drive from Fayetteville seems like it would hardly be worth the effort to move.

I think a move to Arkansas would have more the appearance of following a coach than moving closer to his mother.

Jay, thanks for your contribution to the Illini and we'll miss if you leave but I think we all can understand your moving if you need to be closer to your ailing mother. Best wishes to you and your family and for your mother's recovery.

Happens when players transfer.  Tennessee just did it to a player trying to play closer to home as well

Does anyone know what the exact rules are related to releases.  The grants in aid are presumably annual that can be renewed.  Is the renewal a mutual option or school option only.  Could he wait until he finishes the year then go with no strings?

That's too bad, Prosch is a good kid. I always hoped he'd jump to the middle linebacker spot. He would hurt people. Remember the ASU vs ILL game, ouch.

Best of wishes to him and his mother. He'll be missed.

Memo to the Sleepy Gazoo: pick up a phone, do your own reporting. Oh, right -- that would detract from wheeling egos aorund at the Esquire.

Every newspaper runs stories from other media outlets.  Have you ever heard of the Associated Press?  I'm sure you have since you're such a media expert.

Beckman needs to keep him as Jay is perhaps the best blocking back in the country and only a sophomore. It is not easy to transfer as you have to sit out a year and leave all the friends you have made in two years. I know his mother is very sick but if he had a good future here, he may find a way to play next year at Illiniois. So, good luck Beckman, please keep him here in school.

Illinois doesn't want to "set a precedent" by allowing kids to attend the college of their choice?

Yeah, that'll sell . Just like season tickets.

And you were probably one the was blasting Eric Gordon for changing his mind. Its a wonder any kid would choose Illinois if they read what the so called fans wrote on here and the message boards.

Every college has it's negative fans that (1.) rarely ever have anything positive to contribute

(2.) are always hostile toward the coaching staff, play style, beat writers and/or anybody that does

not buy into their brilliant opinions  (3.) typically believe that their insight and analysis is always

correct and on target and (4.) seemingly live on their computer because their comments are always

there every day and nearly every article.

We all have thoughts and opinions about this program, and those of course can go both ways but

at the end of the day, most of us are Illini fans thick and thin.  Period.
