Tate: Beckman has plenty to do
CHAMPAIGN — It's all up to Tim Beckman now.
The energetic new Illini coach faces Herculean recruiting problems in the next month, with 2012 signings beginning Feb. 1.
It begins with his assembling a staff, Seattle line coach Luke Butkus — star center on the 10-2 Illini in 2001 — among at least four aides expected to be announced this week.
At the top of Beckman's agenda is a need to re-recruit the members of Ron Zook's varsity squad, most importantly junior stars Whitney Mercilus, Michael Buchanan and Terry Hawthorne, and freshman running back Donovonn Young.
Positional depth is a major concern, and there are no apparent replacements close in ability to these four players.
Furthermore, the coach must decide how best to use Jay Prosch in his spread attack, and whether the 250-pound fullback would be more valuable as a middle linebacker.
And with four weeks to go, Beckman must add to the current 15-man list of high school seniors which, at this point, is only marginally better than the commitments he had at Toledo. Illinois is short handed at running back and defensive tackle.
If Mercilus leaves and nothing is done to bolster the defensive line, Illinois could find itself with a disadvantage in the trenches for Big Ten games.
Replacement part?
The loss of Vic Koenning is met with ongoing regret throughout Illini Nation. Over the decades, he is the most obvious game-changer among Illini assistant coaches, and will be the most difficult to replace.
This season he took a marginal unit that lost premier juniors Corey Liuget and Martez Wilson to the 2011 NFL draft and restructured it around two standout subs from the previous year, Mercilus and Jonathan Brown. No one could have expected this team to perform so efficiently ... to rank among the nation's top 10 in several categories..
As it developed, this was the best UI defense in the 15 years since Simeon Rice and Kevin Hardy completed their eligibility. Even with 13 games, the 205 first downs allowed were the lowest by an Illini team since 1995, and the 1,610 rushing yards permitted were the second fewest since 1995. Pass defense held opponents to 162 yards per game, lowest since John Holecek and Dana Howard were part of the operation in 1993.
Before Koenning arrived, the UI's aerial defense was awful. The 3-9 team in 2009 permitted 1,077 more yards than in the first 12 games this season.
Now, Koenning is on his way to North Carolina, and we are reminded that head coaches, particularly those with defensive backgrounds, almost never retain their coordinators. Someone mentioned that Mike Ditka was obligated to keep Buddy Ryan with the Bears. There aren't many cases like that.
So, as this breakup is concluded, it won't go unnoticed that Koenning and his key aides accomplished something in their specialty that UI fans would like to see continued. Saturday was another example. The UI defense held UCLA to 18 net yards rushing and turned the game with Hawthorne's interception return. UCLA had but seven points until the final 30 seconds of a 20-14 result.
It is regrettable that, after repeated attempts to upgrade the defense, the Illini finally located that special individual, and then could not find a way to retain him. It falls into a familiar category of Illinois serving as a stepping stone for anyone who distinguishes himself on these premises. Somebody elsewhere is always willing to pay more.
Tate's tidbits
— Koenning's reworking of the special teams appeared to help as the Illini did reasonably well in the kicking game (OK, Derek Dimke missed a field goal, and the fake kick boomeranged). Most importantly, the punting excelled and they permitted no long returns on punts and kickoffs by UCLA.
— It should be noted that the six-team Leaders Division will probably be weaker in 2012 that at any time in the future. Ohio State is ineligible for the Big Ten playoff, Penn State is still looking for a coach, and Illinois, Indiana and Purdue are not deemed strong threats. That leaves it up to Wisconsin, which will be favored to win it again. And Illinois, admittedly inconsistent, played the Badgers off their feet for a half Nov. 19 ... but only for a half.
— One of the complaints by five UI assistant coaches who, by mutual error, lost the rollover paragraph in their contracts, is that if they accept coaching jobs for less money elsewhere, they expected to receive the difference in 2012 from Illinois. The UI administration is intent on sticking to the non-rollover contractual terms as signed by them.
— ESPN.com's Gene Wojciechowski reports that Ron Guenther, now a consultant with the Big Ten, helped to frame the concept of the conference's arrangement to ultimately play 12 nonconference football games with the Pac-12. This further solidifies the strong relationship between the Rose Bowl partners.
— Former Illini assistant Mike Locksley will be back recruiting his favorite Washington, D.C., area for Maryland, but he arrives just as head coach Randy Edsall is receiving strong criticism for a disappointing first season. The Terps lost their last eight games and are in deep trouble financially, possibly cutting eight varsity sports.
Loren Tate writes for The News-Gazette. He can be reached at ltate@news-gazette.com.
Loren, for all the lamenting in the above article I suspect that the new coach is well on his way to accomplishing all that you have layed out for him to do. The bright side for sports writers at the NG is that there will be plenty of fresh material to write about for awhile.
The Sky is Falling.. The Sky is Falling...Thank you Chicken Little Tate for warning for us of the disaster that awaits our perennial BCS Bowl Program. Certainly the Beckmann administration can't be an upgrade..nope, not a chance since Jesus has left the program for the Tarheels...Coach Vic will be missed, but it does not mean the Four Horseman are on their way.to Memorial Stadium...
Regarding replacing Vic Koenning and his assistants: it's not that Koenning is irreplaceable but he and his assistants are going to be very hard to replace with top coaches that will maintain the 7th rated defense in the country. Not impossible to replace Koenning but anyone demonstrably as good or better is making a lot more money than Koenning and won't be swayed to come to Illinois. Attacking Koenning is sour grapes ignorance - prepare for defense to to get worse. Whether top defensive players leave or not is immaterial. Vic lost his top 2 defendewrs and made the defense even better than his first year here. A great coach recruits and grooms able replacements and just reloads, ala OSU, LSU, etc. It will be interesting to see who Beckman comes up with for defensive coaches, but they likely won't be as good.
Certainly agree, well said. Would imagine that Coach Vic is making more money already. As far as the defense being worse it is going to be a lot worse. Everybody keeps saying that Beckman is defensive minded, well I am defensive minded but not good enough to be a coach and no where have I seen that any of Beckmans defensive numbers indicate that he is any good at it. HE BLEW THE THING WITH VIC ON PURPOSE! He was trying to appease himself and the Illini nation. By the review of the comments by a good part of Illini Nation, they seem to be polyanna and more like Cubs fans, hope they will win but know they are not, doomed, but like the comfort of losing. Seems to be no concept of what it takes to really be consistent top winners at this top college level. It is Thomas's fault for hiring a minor league coach with no proven good numbers in his stength area.
I for one am just fed up with the loser mentality! Go Illini! Go Cubs!
The reference to Jesus is uncalled for. There are many, many coaches, players, and administrators who have faith in Jesus Christ. Coach Vic is one of them. Jesus has died on the cross of calvary for their sins. These men believe that faith in Jesus is one that is a personal relationship and they are not ashamed to talk about him. Jesus has offered them the hope of forgiveness of sins in their life and a hope of eternal life with Him in heave. They have accepted that free offer
I'll offer a comment on the second comment.I enjoyed the Biblical references, especially the descriptive use of the Four Horseman.Although the image of War,Famine,Pestilence and Death seems strong, I wouldn't be surprised if the legendary Loren Tate believes the failures of the UI athletic efforts are a forerunner to such a disaster.I would love to see a refernce to the great faith of the Centurion...but probably won't have that wish fulfilled by reading the News-Gazette.
What are some of you commenters talking about. Loren Tate made no mention of religion, the bible or Four Horsemen in his article yet people couldn't resist attacking Tate and using religious reference. Makes no sense at all and NO place for religion in this discussion at all.
As we await Beckman's announcement of his assistants, the recruiting season has begun and signing day is Feb 1.
One of the best defenses in the country was in place with lots of returning players and Beckman basically let Vic walk with his mismanagement of that situation.
Let's see if his new assistants come with better resumes than the ones he let get away.
Apparently Moses Saint Tate believe that Koenning is the only coach in the entire known universe who can coach defense and that Beckmanm can not possibly ever ever ever find someone to do a good job. Maybe what Moses was really trying to imply is that Koenning should have been named head coach because Moses wanted it to be so. And after all, only Moses knows anything. The rest of us are just unruly peasants who should not be allowed to watch games. Here's hoping that Beckman doesn't pay much attention to the blatherings of a writer stuck in the 1950s. Beckman seems capable and deserves a chance to prove himself.
Moonpie
Illini defense was terrible until Coach Vic arrived in Champaign. To have now three players leave early for NFL draft in his two years here and have seventh best defense in country despite our terrible special teams and offense will be a hard act to follow.
I'm for giving Beckman a chance but he has already lost perhaps the best defensive coordinator in country that was in place and had good assistants around him .Why start from scratch when something is going good? Good luck to Beckman!
Where is his announcement on assistants; time is wasting.
“and we are reminded that head coaches, particularly those with defensive backgrounds, almost never retain their coordinators”...I guess if we keep repeating this BS fantasy it will become reality...when Ron Zook came to Illinois he brought Charlie Strong with him...Urban Meyer wasn’t threatened by Strong and he and his AD did what was needed to convince him to stay in Gainesville. And we are now stepping stone to football powerhouse North Carolina?? How about Beckman not immediately acknowledging and embracing Koenning?? And initially offering him a CO-coordinator position... is it just me who finds that a little demeaning after what Vic accomplished... I would bet Beckman would do things differently if he had the chance, that being said I am happy he is reaching out to past players and think he will eventually get us competitive. But this BS that we tried to keep him is stupid.
1 more similarity… Strong was not only Zooks’ defensive coordinator… he served as the teams interim head coach for the bowel game after Zook was fired.. sound familiar.. a Zook defensive coordinator who serves as interim head coach after Zook is fired… so the ALMOST NEVER HAPPENS… happened under the EXACT same set of circumstances last time Zook was fired.
I'm all for giving Coach Beckman a chance, but if he has not made a contender of the Illini in three years then it's time for him and the AD to go. Coach Beckman comes across with the impression that he thinks he is another Urban Meyer and that remains to be seen. Losing Koenning was a major mistake; my opinion is that Beckman did not want the competition. So let's get on with the Beckman era, but let's always be aware of who is available for the position.
newsflash: Koenning accepted a CO-coordinator position at UNC. Why some choose to believe that Koenning was disrespected by such an egregious offer by Beckman is beyond me. It is becoming standard practice to issue co-coordinator titles to lure coaches and justify pay raises, Koenning would have been in charge of the defense and he and Beckman both knew it. Koenning chose to leave on his own. No need to blame Beckman.
Was Koenning a terrific DC for the Illini. Of course.
Will Beckman + new DC + new OC be better than Zook + Koenning + Petrino? That is what it comes down to and we won't know if that is the case until 3-4 years from now.
Ummm . . . Koenning did not accept a co-coodinator position at UNC. Koennoing accepted the Associate Head Coach - Defense position which is the top position on defense (over the coordinator position) and number 2 overall behind Fedora. Former Illini coach Dan Disch was given the defensive coordinator position (under Koenning) so Fedora could get more money approved for Disch. While at Illinois Beckman at first only offered Koenning an equal co-coordinator position and offered less money than UNC did as well. Beckman just wasn't willing to give Koenning the money he deserved for being one of the top 10 defensive coordinators in the country and started off on the wrong foot with that co-coordinator BS. Can't blame Vic for leaving.
News flash…. Vic Koenning shares his position with no one at North Carolina…. “On the other side of the ball, Vic Koenning is coming off a 20-14 win against UCLA in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl as the interim head coach at Illinois. Koenning is the only assistant to have not coached with Fedora, but he said he had his eye on Koenning for a long time. As associated head coach for defense, Koenning is essentially the No. 2 man” That’s # 2 to Fedora…he got a promotion.. Beckman realized the slight too late and LATTER changed his offer to defensive coordinator… period!! No CO! being asked to stay as CO-coordinator was surely a slap in the face. And it must have meant something or Beckmam wouldn’t then offer it without the co- prefix .
“Disch, the defensive coordinator at Southern Miss in 2011, will serve the same role at North Carolina. Fedora said he hasn't decided whether Koenning or Disch will call plays on that side of the ball.”

but by all means, continue to be outraged...
Regarding Vic leavilng the the end of defense. First, if Vic stayed, the defense will be different next year with different players and different opponents. No guarantee's we will be better or worse with Vic here.
As for the new coach, my guess is that he will not give a Forearm Shiver to a player on the sidelines like Zook did his first year here that was Poo Pooed because he was the great Zook from Florida. Beckman gives us the youth look that hopefully will be successfull.
Let get writing about Weborn and his departure. We can only hope now that most of you understand why I am ready for it.
Not outraged in the least… I believe Beckman has every right in the world to chose who he sees fit as defensive coordinator. And I hope he does well. But to believe Beckman made an all-out concerted effort to get Koenning to stay on is absurd. Had that been the case, the 1st words out of his mouth at his introduction should have been, “ I’d like to offer coach Koenning the position of associate head coach and a substantial raise. Instead he offered him a Co-prefix he knew Koenning would refuse,... there is nothing wrong with wanting to start with a clean slate with like minded people.. just be an honest man about it… like Fedora was.. he wanted who he wanted.. FYI Disch defensive coordinator, Koenning is the associate head coach.
"Instead he offered him a Co-prefix he knew Koenning would refuse,"
so your conspiracy theory is that Beckman never wanted Koenning on his staff and intentionally made him an offer that included a "co-" in front of his current title so that he would be so offended he would leave on his own and Beckman would look like the good guy?
Beckman is on record saying he offered the co- title to Koenning so that he could recruit a big-time young assistant from a school to Illinois as a co-coordinator because the guy would never make a lateral move from a great program to the Illini.
Koenning also said the co- title was no big deal. His wife wanted to move south to be closer to family and he was looking at jobs in the south. He even specifically mentioned Auburn and Troy. Koenning left on his own.
Koenning is a great coach, no doubt about that. And guess what? So is Tenuta.
The future is bright with coach Beckman and the coaching staff he is putting together. I can't wait for next season!
No conspiracy theory… I only hoped had our new AD and head coach really wanted beyond anything else to coerce Vic to stay they could have. The AD and new head coach after Zook’s previous fire was able to, that after he already said he was following Zook to Illinois. I hope my theory is correct and not yours. I hope our new AD and head coach aren’t so inept and so non persuasive or committed, or willing to do whatever it takes, that they couldn’t convince Koenning to stay where he knows the players, the system, is popular with players and fans and has experienced unbelievable success... I don’t think it was a conspiracy… I think it was a politically correct gesture.. I only hope our AD and coach, if they REALLY wanted to, could have got him to stay. Your missing my point. I’m not even saying they should have kept him, or it would have been better if they did. My original comment was in response to Tate stating how it never happens, and I reminded him the last time Zook got fired, under almost exact same circumstances, it did, that AD and head coach did whatever it took… Koenning didn’t leave Illinois to take over the defense at Alabama… this is North Carolina… I like the hires Beckmam done.. I think he’s gonna do good… I’m just not a big fan of sugar coated phony BS.. tell it like it is. I respect that more even if I disagree.
the young assistant could have been the defensive coordinator, and Koenning promoted to associate head coach in charge of defense, or #2 man and a big raise… oh wait a minute Fedora did something like that to get Koenning to make the upward lateral move o North Carolina and Disch to recruit Jacksonville Florida.. all I’m saying were there’s a will there’s a way. If he really wanted to he could have found a way to have Koenning stay and get this mysterious young gun super recruiter… by the way, when is he announcing this guy??
Beckman's total defense at Toledo in 2011 ranked 76th nationally, the NC State linebacker coach Beckman just hired had a 2011 total defense rank of 41, Coach Vic #7. Those are the stats from NCAA. If Beckman was not going to hire a DC from another school, why did he not go after some assistant to the DC at one of the top 6 defensive teams in 2011: Alabama, LSU, Georgia, S. Carolina, MSU, or Florida State University. I would have chosen a Georgia assistant to the DC because of all the rich recruiting talent in Georgia, but that's just me.
The guy Beckman picked has experience and may do a good job; only time will tell but he would not have been my choice.
