Beckman adds two

CHAMPAIGN — New Illinois football coach Tim Beckman has hired two members of his staff at Toledo to join him in Champaign.

The school said Tuesday that Beckman has hired assistant Rockets head coach Mike Ward and running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Alex Golesh. They are Beckman’s first two hires at Illinois. Their positions on the Illinois staff will be announced later.

Ward served as a co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Toledo. He has coached there since 2009 after coaching at Bowling Green from 1992 through 2008.

Golesh has been at Toledo since 2009. He previously coached as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma State and Northern Illinois.
Beckman was hired earlier this month to replace Ron Zook, who was fired after a 6-6 season.

Great news for Illiniois getting two more coaches from Toldedo that have worked with Beckman and one was his co-defensive coordinator. He was co-defensive coordinator at Toledo but now he can be a defensive coordinator here.

Have you looked at their defense?  It stunk.  MT and TB have a three year run at best.  Hopefully we arent' giving guaranteed contracts to a bunch of unproven coaches.  We had a good one in VK, and TB messed that up about as bad as you could.  Shows me he doesn't have his eyes on the prize.  And the "you have to let them hire their own guys"  people are so wrong again.   Instead of a challenged offense and a strong defense. We will be challenged on both sides, with no recruiting.  Sorry MT, Illinois is not Cincinnati.

Beckman's defenses have always been bad I guess MT did not care about that. Whether they have any eyes on the prize that we think they should remains to be seen, but maybe the prize is smaller for them. I agree the "hire your own guys" crap is going to cost us. The only challenge is for the alumn's and fans to be able to put up with this lack of leadership and winning, the losing ways that we have are teaching our kids what? How to be what? The reason they did not say what positions the new coach's have is because everyone one would probably go nuts.

YUCK!!!!!!! Is this the best that Beckman can do, if so, Illini won't be progressing beyond mediocrity anytime soon. Toledo had a very mediocre defense and now Illinois has to take a step down with Ward instead of Koenning. Plus the recruiting coordinator has only two years experience (not including menial graduate assistant). Go from Zook the super recruiter to a mid-major recruiter with 2 yrs experience. Beckman will be able to turn Illinois into a mid-major fairly quickly if this keeps up. Then perhaps Illinois could leave the Big Ten and petition for admittance to the Mid American Conference so they can compete on a level playing field. Also Coach Beckman and his assistants would feel right at home.

Why would any coach worth anything want to come and work under Tim Beckman--except those already under him at Toledo.  Looks like Beckman is taking Illinois football to the mid-major level, alot like what Bruce Weber has done to the BB program.

Good point! It is true our BB program seems to be ruined for several years now.

Are you guys high or just haters?  BB program ruined for several years now?  we are 11-1. we have had multiple top recruiting classes. We made it to march madness. We finished 4th in the big ten last year. Ooo ya that sounds like mid major basketball program for sure.

Rumor has Wyoming offensive coordinator coming to Illiniois. Wyoming just piled up 15 points against Temple in the bowl game.

Toledo's defense under co-defensive coordinator, who Beckman just hired, gave up 126 points in two games this year. You can't make this stuff up.

first of all yeah Illini basketball is not as good as their 11-1 record indicates and once we start big ten play that will be found out. bruce Weber is a terrible coach/recruiter. As for timmy beckman and his band of merry lottery winners from toledo yeah this by far really takes the cake and is the last straw for me and my family we are not gonna go watch a mid major team play football with lower level coaches and players we cant bare to watch the embarrassmant.Wow where did mike thomas get his talent judgement from? a cracker jack box? our football and basketball teams will never beable to compete with mid major coaches running both programs period end of story the only thing that brings about real change for the better is protest by the fans for the fans by way of not going to games until there is a real change for the better. ok if you are not dedicated to winning then you will not be getting anymore of mine or my families money period. i want to see winning results right now.
