Koenning weighing options

CHAMPAIGN — On the surface, it would seem to be an easy answer. Do you want to continue as Illinois defensive coordinator?

That's the question facing Illinois interim head coach Vic Koenning. But the answer is far from easy.

Koenning has to consider the fate of the other three coaches on the defensive staff. Keith Gilmore, Ron West and Mike Gillhamer have combined with Koenning to produce the nation's No. 7 defense.

"You all know me," Koenning said. "I'm only as good as the staff. The success we had this year was because of us, the defensive staff and the players.

"Those guys deserve options and they deserve to stay if they want to, but that's not my call."

Sources close to the program have said none of the remaining offensive coaches will return. Former offensive coordinator Paul Petrino left to return to Arkansas last week. Quarterbacks coach Jeff Brohm, running backs coach DeAndre Smith, line coach Joe Gilbert and tight ends/fullbacks coach Chip Long will remain with the team through the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.

Just two of the four, Smith and Gilbert, have guaranteed money from Illinois for the 2012 season.

New Illinois coach Tim Beckman originally offered Koenning a chance to be co-defensive coordinator. Later, he changed the offer to defensive coordinator.

"He said he'd like for me to stay," Koenning said after Tuesday's practice. "I don't want to get into all the details, but there were provisions and parameters.

"There's a lot of things to consider. He asked me if I can make the decision by Wednesday."

Koenning said he has other offers. He mentioned openings at Auburn and Troy.

"Not as many as I'd hoped, but enough," Koenning said. "It only takes one. It's like finding a woman that you want to spend the rest of your life with, it only takes one. Usually."

Since Ron Zook was replaced by Beckman, fans have been adamant about keeping Koenning in place.

"I was at Clemson when we set every dadgum record in a four-year period, and I didn't have this kind of support," Koenning said. "I'm just so appreciative and humbled by the fans and people here. It gives a person a lot to think about."

Koenning said he plans to talk to his wife Tracey and family before making a decision.

"Once upon a time I told my wife that she wasn't going to tell me where I was going and that was the worst mistake I ever made," Koenning said. "So we discuss things in great detail now.

"She'd like to be closer to her parents in Orange Beach, Alabama. But I know my kids are very happy here."

Stopping by. Former Illinois coach Zook made a brief appearance at the beginning of Tuesday's practice. He was greeted by coaches and some of the players.

Zook didn't stay for the bulk of the workout.

Staying home. Koenning said there are still a handful of players in danger of not making the trip because of academic issues. He didn't want to name the players.

Aside from running the number 7 defense in the country, the man is honest and has some great quotes:  "It only takes one. It's like finding a woman that you want to spend the rest of your life with, it only takes one. Usually."

You got to love this guy

I love this guy for saying dadgum if nothing else. I don’t know what all the terms and conditions are, or how they would handcuff him. After what he did, I have no idea why you would want to handcuff him.. but thanks for setting the bar so high, if someone else does come in, he better be dadgum good.

Co-defensive coordinator ?!  Give me a break.  #7 defense...IN THE NATION...and he wants co-defensive coordinators?  Good thing Beckman altered that offer.

But Koenning is correct in that West & Co have been a primary reason for the D's success.

I really like the scheme because it doesn't require 330 lb defensive tackles and 270 lb DE's.

Please stay Coach Vic.

I watched Northern Illinois University play a couple of times this year--  they play and exciting fast paced--no huddle --wide open type of offense and they put up 63 points on Toledo earlier this year.   Why not take a hard look at their offense coordinator?  I think he has only been there one year under their new coach who had previously been the  Defensive Coordinator at Wisonsin.  I think NIU averaged about 40 points a game and seemed to never be out of game.

Illinois needs Vic Koenning on Defense - Please Stay Vic - Keep Vic

Much of what I would say has been well said by others here. I knew the new head coach would want to have the success on defense that Koenning achieved and it would logically folow that Vic would be extended an offer to stay. Co-coordinator offer was such a slight, no wonder Vic was disappointed (as he said after Monday's offer) and understandably feeling alienated. So Beckman ups the offer to full coordinator Tuesday but won't keep Koenning's staff together which was instrumental in achieving the nationallly #7 rated defense. Vic is loyal and also understands how integral most of that staff was to the defense's success. I wouldn't want to have to train a whole new bunch of assistants myself and then go out and try to match the level of defense which my harmonious and in sync staff managed the season before.

Coack K, you know we all want you and your staff to stay, but it certainly sounds like you're heading to Auburn. What a HUGE loss that would be for the football program and us fans. #7 in the NATION. And that ultimately leaves Beckman a man on an island after his vaunted OC at Toledo said "no thanks" to the Illinois OC job. Now we have a "CEO" with no staff and no reported prospects. God help us if he tries to bring in a MAC DC. I thought Thomas said the program just needed "a few tweaks." Now we're looking at a full-on rebuild. What a joke. My disappointment in this program continues...

I guess it would have made too much sense to leave well enough alone and focus on what needs focus, “special” teams and no-ffense. Instead of expending time and energy dismantling a highly successful and proven unit, I would go get an offensive coordinator. How about making that #1 priority?

Good-Bye Vic, you did a fine job here and I know that you'll be successful wherever you end up! It's a sad day for illini nation. No coaches,no players and no dadgum chance in hell that we will ever be competitive in football.
