Mercilus wins Hendricks

Illinois junior Whitney Mercilus won the Hendricks Award, which goes to the nation's top defensive end.

Mercilus is the first national award winner at Illinois since 1995, when Kevin Hardy won the Butkus Award. Dana Howard won the Butkus in 1994.

Mercilus leads the nation in sacks and forced fumbles. Soon after the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, he will make a decision about returning to Illinois for his senior season.

Fantastic news! Congratulations to WM for persevering through a tough season and winning this award!  Shame on the big ten for giving the D line award to Devon Still of Penn State.  Nothing against Mr. Still.  Mercilus may be the best DE in the country, but confence biases toward the power teams apparently run deep.

He's a lock in the NFL now.  Its sort of a shame though, he was such a good player and could have really helped our defense dominate next year, but in this game, you might as well ride the momentum while you're high.

And somehow he was not the B1G defensive player of the year.  Seems that someone got it wrong.
