Bum ankle bugging Young
CHAMPAIGN — Illinois freshman tailback Donovonn Young will have all sorts of time this week to get healthy. Classes are out for Thanksgiving break.
The freshman tailback suffered a sprained ankle in the fourth quarter of Saturday's 28-17 loss to Wisconsin. Young limped into the locker room with his father following close behind.
"Hopefully, he can come back and be ready to go," Illinois coach Ron Zook said. "He was in pretty good spirits this morning when I talked to him."
Before the injury, Young played well. He scored both Illinois touchdowns and finished with 43 yards on eight carries.
"I was proud of him," Zook said. "He ran hard and broke a couple tackles."
Golden opportunity. On a weekend when four highly ranked teams were upset, Illinois had a chance to add a fifth. The Illini led 17-7 at halftime and had the ball to start the third quarter.
But four turnovers in the second half cost the Illini. The Badgers play Penn State on Saturday for a spot in the Big Ten title game.
"We've got to figure a way to put a game together," Zook said. "We haven't done that yet. They're pretty good. They've got a lot of weapons and they're playing with a lot of confidence."
You make the call. Zook said he turned in officiating calls to the Big Ten for the conference to evaluate. Zook and his team weren't happy about a pair of offensive pass interference calls late in the first half.
Signal change? Zook said freshman quarterback Reilly O'Toole will likely play against Minnesota. But the coach isn't sure if the team will use the same rotation it had against Wisconsin.
Sophomore starter Nathan Scheelhaase hit 15 of 19 passes in the game.
"There's no question that Nathan gives us, right now, we feel like the best chance to win," Zook said.
