Fuller finds football destination

CHAMPAIGN — Soon after giving the Illinois football coaches his oral commitment Wednesday morning, TaJarvis Fuller had a simple order of business: head to Sixth and Green streets.
"As soon as I made my commitment, about 30 minutes later I went and bought me a jacket," Fuller said, smiling. "I went to Gameday."
He came out with a bright orange Illinois hat and sweatshirt, both of which he was proudly sporting later in the afternoon at the one- day camp in Memorial Stadium. Chatting up many folks on the sideline, the rising senior safety/outside linebacker from Dunbar High in Fort Myers, Fla., already looked at home.
Which makes sense, because that's why he committed.
"Everything was good. I just enjoyed myself while I was here, and I felt like it was just home. So I might as well go ahead and commit while I'm here," Fuller said of his thought process.
Fuller got a full tour of campus Tuesday, visiting everything from the Undergraduate Library to the Irwin Academic Center to the state-of-the-art football facilities. He also got plenty of time to talk with the Illinois coaches, whom he called "real cool cats." After that, it just made sense for Fuller to choose Illinois — his favorite program for the past three months — over Maryland, Wisconsin, UCLA, Minnesota, Louisville and Georgia Tech, among others.
"I did it because I felt the atmosphere around here was real good," Fuller said.
Asked if his commitment was "firm," Fuller said "yes." He still will visit Indiana and Purdue this week, but that's simply because he's on a Midwest tour of colleges with a few high school teammates who are camping at various schools. He said he has no reservations about committing, except to joke that he will have to adjust to Illinois' cold winters.
"I've never, never experienced under 50-degree weather," Fuller said. "Never. No snow. I've never seen a day of snow in my life. But you got to see new things, experience new things. Might as well go ahead and take the chance while you're going to college."
Fuller, the fourth commitment for Illinois in the 2012 class, said he could play safety or outside linebacker at Illinois, depending on his size and speed. He's currently 190 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash in the 4.5-second range, but he said he'd like to add 10 pounds and get his 40 time in the 4.4 range.
Fuller's commitment could prove doubly important for Illinois. He's teammates at Dunbar with Christian Brown, a 280-pound defensive tackle whom the Illini have offered. Brown was supposed to join in on the trip to Illinois as well but couldn't because of a death in his family, Fuller said.
Still, Brown remains interested in the Illini, and he and Fuller would like to play together in college.
"We're coming back up here; I think it's going to be November," Fuller said. "He said if he likes it, he could commit."
