The Final Word

There isn’t a sign in the Missouri locker room that reads, “Make it 6-0.” Tigers coach GARY PINKEL swears his team hasn’t discussed its success in St. Louis against Illinois.
“We don’t ever talk about stuff like that,” Pinkel said.
“I’m just kind of a year-to-year guy. Every year, it’s different teams and a different situation. We’re not focusing on the past, whether we’ve won or lost.”
Unlike Pinkel, Illinois coach RON ZOOK has talked about the recent failures in the series with his team.
“We’ve spent a lot more time on that than we have in the past,” Zook said.
“It’s important that we have a little success in this rivalry.”
Pinkel wants to continue the series against Illinois in St. Louis. The teams don’t have any future games scheduled.
“It’s been great for the city of St. Louis,” Pinkel said. “Financially, it’s great for both schools. And it’s financially great for the city. It’s a bowl-game atmosphere. Hopefully, we’ll be back here.”

The Tigers had a 30-minute walkthrough Friday afternoon. It’s a departure from normal practice.
“With the dome, we just want to get our receivers, punt returners, specialty players under the lights,” Pinkel said. “It went well.”
Pinkel is happy with Saturday’s early start.
“I think every coach likes to wake up and play,” Pinkel said. “When you play at 8 o’clock at night, that’s a long, long day.”

Originally, Missouri receiver JERRELL JACKSON was supposed to miss Saturday’s game with a broken wrist suffered during training camp. But the team’s leading returning receiver will start and play with a small cast.
“He’s functioning pretty good out there,” Pinkel said.

Missouri had plenty of off-the-field news in recent weeks because of arrests and the dismissal of star running back DERRICK WASHINGTON. Pinkel said the team hasn’t been distracted.
“Everything has been business as usual,” Pinkel said. “For us, nothing’s changed. We just stay with what the schedule is and communicate well with our whole football team. We have each other’s backs.”

Like everyone else, Pinkel hasn’t seen Illinois quarterback NATHAN SCHEELHAASE take a snap in college. But he is familiar with the redshirt freshman.
“We saw him when he was in high school,” Pinkel said. “He’s a very talented guy, a smart guy, a great athlete. Obviously, we’re very concerned about him. Any time you face new coordinators, too, that’s a concern on offense or defense.”

Illinois brought eight freshmen on the trip: quarterbacks CHANDLER WHITMER and MILES OSEI, defensive end BRANDON DENMARK, fullback JAY PROSCH, linebackers JONATHAN BROWN and HOUSTON BATES, receiver DARIUS MILLINES and tight end EVAN WILSON.
“There will be a few of them that get a chance to play,” Zook said.
Missouri expects to play six or seven first-year freshmen, Pinkel said.

The Illini arrived at the Edward Jones Dome at 5 p.m. for a short walkthrough. It’s the first of two bus trips this season for the team, which also will hit the road for the Nov. 20 game at Northwestern.
“It’s amazing, it really is a short trip,” Zook said.
The team spent Friday night at the Hilton near Busch Stadium.

After leaving the Edward Jones Dome, Zook went to Busch Stadium. He didn’t throw out the first pitch (TYLER GRIFFEY’s job Friday), but he did appear on pregame shows with the Cardinals’ radio and television networks.

Fox Sports Net is carrying Saturday’s game, which means you can watch it on either Fox Sports Midwest or Comcast SportsNet.
JOEL MEYERS is handling the play by play, DAVE LAPHAM is serving as analyst and JIM KNOX is working the sidelines.
Knox likes to get involved in the game, so you might see him trying out an instrument with the band or going into the nosebleed section of the dome. In the past, he’s run onto the field with Colorado’s mascot, RALPHIE.

Good seats remain available for Saturday’s game, with attendance projected in the mid- to upper-50,000s. If that holds, it will be the smallest crowd in the six-game series, which resumed in 2002. The smallest previous crowd was 61,876 in 2002.
Fans coming to the game are reminded the doors open at 10 a.m. for the 11:30 a.m. kickoff.
