Monday's news & notes
Bob Asmussen's update from Monday's Illinois football practice (ask him about it here):
Ron Zook on tight end London Davis, who has left the team
"You don't want to lose anybody. And I don't want to lose anybody. Guys have got to do what they think they've got to do. There's only going to be 11 guys who play. You earn your right to play. Evidently, he wasn't satisfied. It happens everywhere. I'm surprised with him a little bit."
Ron Zook on new defensive backs Justin Green, Jack Ramsey and Steve Hull
"They've all done a great job. Obviously, we've got to do a good job of keeping it simple so we're going to maybe not do some things we were going to do. We're just going to let them play and have fun. They'll all three play."
Offensive coordinator Paul Petrino on coaches game- planning for Missouri
"You usually do a game plan in the offseason. Then, you kind of fine tune it in the summer. Once you come back from Camp Rantoul you go through it (again) and see everything we're doing best compared to what we've got game planned. We add it all together."
Cornerback Jack Ramsey on the difficulty of moving to defense
"I'm trying to learn as quick as I can. They're trying to make it as simple as possible. I'm coming along fine, it's just a learning process. I'm having fun. It's not easy because I haven't tackled anybody in three years. In the boundary (corner), you've got to be physical. You've got to come up and play the run. That's the biggest step."

The WPIAL long has been a major stop for Division I colleges seeking outstanding linebackers.
With players like McKeesport's Branden Jackson, Woodland Hills' Ejuan Price and Gateway's Armstead Williams highlighting the ranks, recruiters are flocking to the area again.
Today, we take a look at the players who figure to be the top linebackers in the WPIAL this season. One caveat, though: Players who were listed among the top running backs in this series, such as West Allegheny star Mike Caputo, were excluded from also making this list as linebackers.
1. Branden Jackson, McKeesport
A 6-foot-4, 225-pound senior, Jackson is ranked as the No. 9 outside linebacker in the country by Scout.com. Jackson's speed makes him a nightmare for quarterbacks and running backs. His ability to sprint into the backfield or smoothly cover potential receivers causes havoc for opposing offenses. Jackson has scholarship offers from about a dozen Division I schools, including North Carolina, Pitt and Texas Tech.
2. Ejuan Price, Woodland Hills
Price, a 6-foot, 235-pound senior, is ranked No. 16 in the country at middle linebacker by Scout.com. Last season, he had 103 tackles and a team-high 11 sacks for Woodland Hills, the defending WPIAL Class AAAA champion. Price has scholarship offers from 12 schools, including Ohio State, Pitt and Syracuse. "We think defense is going to be one of our strong points, and (Price) has a lot to with that," Woodland Hills coach George Novak said. "He'll be a key player for us."
3. Armstead Williams, Gateway
A 6-3, 200-pound senior, Williams has the quickness and arm reach to drag down ball-carriers and bat down passes. Williams has a folder full of scholarship offers, including Maryland, Michigan and N.C. State. The Gator standout made it known he hopes to receive an offer from the Gators of Florida.
4. Deaysean Rippy, Sto-Rox
Rippy's only a junior and figures to be one of the most sought-after recruits in Western Pennsylvania when he's a senior. A 6-2, 210-pounder, Rippy recorded seven sacks last season.
5. Mike Caprara, Woodland Hills
Caprara was named to the All-Quad East first team along with Price last year. A 6-foot, 200-pound junior, Caprara is another outstanding run-stopper for the Wolverines, who have enough depth to repeat as WPIAL Class AAAA champions.
6. C.J. Revtai, West Allegheny
With Revtai, a 6-1, 220-pound senior, and Caputo anchoring the linebacker corps, it will be extremely difficult to run on the defending WPIAL Class AAA champion Indians.
7. Brandon Small, Clairton
A 6-foot, 200-pound senior, Small was named to The Associated Press all-state first team after helping the Class A Bears to the WPIAL and PIAA titles last season.
8. Garrett Wild, Baldwin
Even though his team finished 2-8, this 6-foot, 185-pound senior earned All-Quad South first-team honors last season.
9. James Caldwell, Steel Valley
Caldwell, a 6-foot, 210-pound senior, was named to the All-Century Conference first team last year and will play a major role for an improving Steel Valley team.
10. Nolan Toran, Gateway
This 5-foot-10, 175-pound senior led the WPIAL Class AAAA runner-up Gators with 79 tackles last season.
