With Hawthorne out, Ramsey on the move

Ask Bob about the revamped look here

CHAMPAIGN – Ron Zook's sixth Illinois team got through Camp Rantoul relatively healthy. But the first week back in Champaign turned treacherous.

Illinois starting cornerback Terry Hawthorne will be out 4 to 6 weeks with a stress reaction in his right foot.

He is the second lost starter this week in the secondary following safety Supo Sanni, who tore his Achilles' tendon and is out for the season.

"When it rains it pours," Zook said.

Hawthorne's injury means more work, and a possible starting role against Missouri, for converted tailback Justin Green. He moved to cornerback at the start of the week and will get extensive time in the opener.

The Illini have also moved Jack Ramsey from receiver to cornerback. He is working with the second team.

"Jack came to me," Zook said. "He wants to do whatever he can do to help this team."

Zook said Hawthorne's injury is similar to one he had in high school. At that time, Hawthorne sat out a game and returned the next week.

On Thursday during practice, Zook said he noticed Hawthorne favoring his foot.

"Terry's such a tough guy," Zook said. "He said he felt it first in camp."

A screw was put in the foot Friday night to enhance the healing process.

"I feel awful for him," Zook said. "The poor guy has worked his tail off. He'll be back."

Starting cornerback Tavon Wilson is working some at safety to help fill in for the loss of Sanni. Steve Hull has moved from receiver to add depth at the position.

"That's more because Tavon is a voice back there," Zook said. "You can put him in there and he can make sure everybody gets lined up."

There are several examples of how the players are coming together to work through adversity. This team first attitude could be an intangible that helps the team win a few close games and end up with a 6-6 record ... or better.

Well Kducey not everyone has to be negative. yes we have lost alot this past week and also with the transfer of London Davis but we still have plenty of talent on the team and a great coaching staff. We arent the only team that has issues with injuries or transfers. I am not gonna say we will beat missou but I will not say that we cant either nor will I be surprised if we do finally win one. If all you want to do is be negative then why even post on pages like this? Take your negativity elsewhere. Go ILLINI!

Unfortunately this is what the team could least afford to happen, any injury is bad but to key players this could be a long year again. Hopefully Hawthorne gets healthy soon and can contribute by week 4, heard he was having a great camp so far he will be missed. Glad that Green, Ramsey and Hull is making the sacrafice to put team first, never know how things might turn out but @ least for now we're 0 - 0. If the running game does its job, Scheelhouse doesn't play like a freshman, the defense somehow someway doesn't implode it might not be so bad. I'm not saying we'll go bowling this year but 4 - 8 , 5 - 7 is possible with some luck.
