Asmussen on the Top 25 and the end of Camp Rantoul
We asked college football beat writer Bob Asmussen ...
Writers 1, Coaches 0. In a blowout. The poll I am fortunate to vote in actually put Boise State where it belonged: at No. 3. The Broncos are closer to No. 2 Ohio State than to No. 4 Florida. That's the right call. Unfortunately, the poll that helps decide who plays in the BCS title game isn't the AP version. The coaches/SIDs ballot is a part of the BCS formula and it has Boise State at No. 5. So, when undefeated Boise State gets left out of the national title game, you'll know who to blame. The Big Ten is treated fairly in the opening AP poll, with four teams in the Top 25. Oddly, nobody else is receiving votes. That could change early in the season. Who's overrated? I'm going with Southern Cal, which has daily off-the-field issues to deal with and might have a tough time in the opener at Hawaii. Underrated? How about Oregon and Oregon State, which are about five sports to low in my opinion.
... On the closing of Camp Rantoul
We got cheated. No final workout on the three grass fields. No chance to say goodbye to the staff at the Quarters Inn. No last meal at Ott's. The good news is that we'll be back again for two weeks next August. And hopefully for every year after that. I'm amazed every time how fast Camp Rantoul goes. One day, you're out in the baking sun and the next day, you're gone. It's been 12 fun years of making the short drive to Rantoul. The players might pretend like it's a pain, but deep down they know it's the best situation to prepare for the season. I'll give the Illini a B-plus for this year's edition, with much of the credit going to infusion of enthusiasm from the new coaches.
