Storyline No. 1: Zook's future

Monday marks the start of fall semester classes at the University of Illinois. With the UI athletic calendar about to get busy again, HQ's Jeff Huth gives us 10 storylines for the 2010-11 school year.

1. Will Ron Zook still coach Illini football after this season?

Speculation on the head coach's future is rampant as coach Ron Zook enters his sixth season at the Illini helm. His overall record at Illinois — 21-39, including 12-28 in the Big Ten — is not an entirely fair measure because Zook arrived when recruiting failures during the final years of the Ron Turner era were debilitating. By Year 3, Zook had a nine-win team that played in the Rose Bowl. But it's been downhill from there, with the Illini going 5-7 in 2008 and 3-9 last season. The decline has been even steeper in the Big Ten, with Illinois losing 10 of its last 13 conference games. In response, Zook brought in new coordinators on both sides of the ball for this season. It's apparent the Illini must show improvement in 2010 for Zook to keep his job. What degree of improvement is necessary? That will be athletic director Ron Guenther's call.
