Asmussen: Lendell Buckner suspended
Listen to Steve Kelly and Loren Tate on Sports Night here.
What happened
Defensive tackle Lendell Buckner has been indefinitely suspended from the team after his arrest Thursday on residential burglary charges. "They know the deal with me about bringing negative publicity, bringing a negative light to the football program, and themselves and their families," Illinois coach Ron Zook said. Zook said he has little information about Buckner's case and won't make a decision about the player's future until after further investigation. "I've got to find out the details," Zook said. The redshirt freshman from Chicago Leo hadn't been on the practice field during the spring while dealing with academic issues. ... The Illini will have a 90-minute scrimmage today on the Memorial Stadium turf. The team was in shorts, shoulder pads and helmets during Friday's workout, which is the usual procedure before an extended scrimmage. "We'll come out and get after it," Zook said. ... Last spring was a pain, literally, for cornerback Patrick Nixon-Youman. The Florida native suffered a torn abdominal muscle that required surgery and a long rehab. He was back with the team during the 2009 season but continued to favor the injured area. "It took awhile," Nixon-Youman said. "In the fall, I favored it. And during 6 a.m.s, I favored it. I was scared of it happening again. My coaches told me I couldn't think about it." Nixon-Youman is feeling better these days and has worked his way into the two-deep at cornerback.
What was said
"Football is a game of emotion. There's no question about that. But showboating ... you can't do that stuff and we're not going to do that stuff. I think if you start losing touchdowns, losing games, losing jobs, yeah, you'll keep them off the field." – Zook on changes to the celebration rule penalty, which go into effect for the 2011 season.
What I'm thinking
The tight end is going to be an important part of the Illinois offense in 2010. Really. Stop laughing. Fans have heard it before, then watched as Michael Hoomanawanui caught 10 passes his senior season (injuries played a part). New offensive coordinator Paul Petrino has shown day after day his willingness to use the tight end. As a receiver. As a blocker. And Petrino uses more than one tight end at a time, which is why you see smiles on the faces of London Davis, Justin Lattimore and pals. "It's going good," Lattimore said. "We're progressing every day. The tight end is going to do a lot in this offense, so it's going to be a good year for us." Davis and Lattimore have a new position coach, with Greg Nord now working with the tight ends. "I've adjusted to it before spring break," Lattimore said. "Getting the chemistry to know him, the type of guy he is." After redshirting his freshman year, Lattimore knows he's got work to do before getting on the field Sept. 4. He's ready to put in the time. "There's room for improvement in everything," Lattimore said. The tight ends are working well together, Lattimore said, making sure they know the new offense.
I doubt very seriously if we have to worry about the celebration penalty. I just hope we get the chance to celebrate. And as we spiral down, this just means we've lost next year's senior recruiting class and the junior one after that. So now (after Zook gets fired next year) we'll have 3 bum classes and be loaded with one and two star recuits. How can anyone get excited about Illinois FB?
