What I learned this week:
BACK TO SCHOOL
We didn't think Ron Turner (right) would be out of work very long after being the designated scapegoat for the Bears (how's that working for you, anyway?) According to Internet reports, Turner will coach quarterbacks and receivers for Stanford's Jim Harbaugh. It makes perfect sense for Turner, a former Stanford assistant who coached Harbaugh with the Bears. Will it be the path back to another college head coaching job? Maybe. If Harbaugh finally takes one of those many offers, Turner would be an easy hire for Stanford. Certainly, Turner learned some lessons at Illinois that would pay off if he gets another chance.
GOOD PICKS
The folks at the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame have added some star power to their board of directors. College and Pro Football Hall of Famer Troy Aikman, Oklahoma State super booster T. Boone Pickens and CBS announcer Jim Nantz are now a part of the 47-person panel. Already on the list: former Mississippi and New Orleans Saints star Archie Manning, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany. When people talk about the powers of college football, the NFF probably doesn't get enough credit. The organization plays a critical role in the development of the sport.
NO MORE CONTROVERSY
Now that Bobby Bowden has retired (OK, forced out earlier than he wanted), the impact of 12 forfeited games seems to have disappeared. Of course, the NCAA rejected Florida State's request to have the wins reinstated for Bowden, who at the time of the argument was chasing Joe Paterno as Division I-A's winningest coach. With Paterno ready to go another decade or so and Bowden ousted, it turns out the whole thing was a big waste of time. You know Paterno isn't getting any games taken away. In fact, they ought to add wins to his final total just for the fun of it.
THUNDERING HERD WARNING
Boise State's going to be the non-BCS school getting all of the preseason hype. And that's perfectly fair. The Broncos have basically their entire starting lineup back from an undefeated team. But ask me to pick another team that's ready for a big season and I'll point to Marshall. The school snuck into a bowl game with a 6-6 record and edged Ohio. That gave momentum to a program with a new coach, Doc Holliday. Now, the former Florida and West Virginia assistant is adding Clemson quarterback Willy Korn to his team. The once highly touted recruit could be in for a huge season in Huntington.
