Jonathan Brown
Linebacker
Memphis (Tenn.) Christian Brothers
6-1, 225
Our take: Illinois has struggled to find quality linebackers in recent classes, but Brown and Mark Wilson give the Illini two guys who can step in and make an immediate contribution on special teams while they bulk up and learn the college game. Brown said he wants to be part of the UI linebacker legacy. He has the bloodlines. His father, Rod, also played linebacker at Memphis State.
Why Illinois? "I got a good feeling when I went up there. I love the coaching staff, the players, and I think I'm going to do some big things up there."
Favorite moment in football: "My junior year I had the biggest hit of my year. I love hitting people being a linebacker and all. It was like fourth and three, and if they got it we probably would have lost. I was on the blitz, and as soon as the running back got the ball I knocked him out and he fumbled."
Favorite football player, college or pro: "Ray Lewis and Dick Butkus."
What school do you want to see the Big Ten add? "If I had my choice, I would want Memphis in the Big Ten. It would always be fun playing against your hometown team."
College football playoff or BCS? "What type of question is that? Football playoff!"
Hidden talent: "I can cook. I cook everything. I don't even have to have the instructions. Just tell me what to make, and I can make it."
Are you playing in the Missouri game? "Hopefully, yeah. My snaps at linebacker might be limited, but I definitely can still play on special teams."
What do you need to improve most before the start of the season? "I want to get my speed up a little bit."
